Time-energy relation

The time-energy relation is a form of the uncertainty principle.



This uncertainty relation can be written as


    ∆E Energy
    ∆t Time
    ℏ Reduced Planck constant

It is used in quantum mechanics to explore the consequences of virtual particle formation, used to study the intermediate states of an interaction. This form of the uncertainty principle is also used to study the concept of vacuum energy.

The relation was first established by the British quantum physicist Paul Dirac in 1928.
