The Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence works through transformations between different quantum mechanics theories.

Anti-de Sitter spaces are used in several gravitation theories, that are formulated with a string theory or M-theory. On the border apply conformal field theories, those are quantum field theories that describe elementary particles, like in the Yang-Mills theory.

This border has one dimension less than the space, which is why this is a holographic principle.

Argentine physicist Juan Maldacena (1968) developed these mathematical transformations that are called “dualities.
