The extended complex plane emerges by expanding the plane of complex numbers with a point at infinity. This is indicated by

the complex numbers C united with infinity.

You can see this Riemann sphere as the complex plane that is wrapped around a ball.

Due to the extension, indefinite expressions such as

sometimes get a meaning anyway.

This sphere is named after the famous German mathematician Bernhard Riemann (1826 - 1866).
