Dirac equation

The Dirac equation gives a mathematical description of all spin-½ massive particles.

Explanation

The equation was originally written in the form

where

    β 4×4 matrix
    m Mass
    c Speed of light
    an 4×4 matrix
    pn Momentum operator 4×4 matrix
    ψ Wave function
    x,t Spacetime coordinates
     i Imaginary unit
     ℏ Reduced Planck constant
Partial derivative with respect to time

History

The British physicist Paul Dirac published the equation in 1928. It was the first theory to account fully for special relativity in the context of quantum mechanics.
