Leibniz's rule for differentiation of a product describes the general product rule for multiple derivatives

When the functions f and g can both n times be differentiated, you can apply this rule. For n = 1 you get

In particular for n = 2 you see

and this shows the analogy with the formula for the binomium of Newton.

The German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz (1646 - 1716) described this formula.
