Magnetic field

The strength of a magnetic field H describes the magnitude and direction in which a magnetic force exerts on moving electric charges and magnetic dipoles.

Explanation

A magnetic field penetrates space and exerts a magnetic force on moving electric charges and magnetic dipoles. Magnetic fields surround electric currents, magnetic dipoles, and changing electric fields.

It is a vector quantity that plays a role in electromagnetic field theory.

Example 1

The magnetic field strength occurs in the Maxwell equation of the magnetic flux density

where

    B Magnetic flux density
    µ0 Magnetic field constant
    H Magnetic field strength
    M Magnetization
