Negative number

The root of a negative number has no real value. However, you can perform calculations.

 


Example 1

You may not multiply roots of negative numbers directly and so the calculation

          

is wrong. You must use the imaginary unit, that is defined by i2 = –1 and then you get

You probably did not expect that.

 


Example 2

The division of two negative roots

gives a positive number, but you probably wouldn't have expected anything else.
