Inverse

The multiplicative inverse of a number x is , where also applies

 


Explanation

The inverse of a fraction is created by exchanging the numerator and denominator. You can write each number as a fraction, and so

You can write the number 2 also as 21 and the inverse as but also as 2–1. These different formats are all used in mathematics.
