Ordinal number

An ordinal number indicates the position of an element in a set of elements.

 


Explanation

In set theory you can work with well-ordered sets. There you use the natural numbers 0, 1, 2, ... . These change into transfinite ordinal numbers, starting with ω.

 


History

German mathematician Georg Cantor introduced ordinal numbers in 1897.
