Plasma

A plasma is a gaseous substance in which the particles are slightly ionized.

Explanation

In a plasma, some atoms have lost one or more electrons. The electrons detached from the electron cloud move freely through space, and the atom nucleus left behind is then ionized. When enough atoms are ionized to noticeably change the electrical character of the gas, one speaks of a plasma.

History

Plasma was first identified by the Britisch chemist William Crookes in 1879.
