Polariton

A polariton is a quasiparticle resulting from strong coupling of electromagnetic waves with an electric or magnetic dipole-carrying excitation.

Explanation

For example, at optical frequencies, plasmons can couple with a photon to create another quasiparticle called a plasmon polariton.

History

Ukrainian physicist Kirill Tolpygo (1916 - 1994) is known for his theory of condensed matter.
