Spin is a fundamental property of atomic nuclei, hadrons and elementary particles.

It is a mathematical description of this property and has nothing to do with an actual rotation of a particle around its axis.

Those particles with half-integer spin quantum numbers, such as 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 are known as fermions, while those particles with integer spin, such as 0, 1, 2 are known as bosons.

The mathematical theory was elaborated in detail by the Austrian physicist Wolfgang Pauli in 1927.
