Tau

A tau is a negatively charged elementary particle with spin ½.

 


Explanation

The Tau is a lepton of the third generation and is about 3477 times as heavy as an electron. The corresponding antiparticle is the antitau. Taus and antitaus are fermions.

History

The name "tau" (Greek: three) refers to the third generation. The tau-lepton was discovered in 1970 by the American physicist Martin Lewis Perl (1927 - 2014).
