Transmutation
In nuclear physics, transmutation is the conversion of one chemical element into another.
Explanation
Transmutation makes it possible to convert long-lived hazardous nuclear waste into isotopes that decay more quickly into less hazardous isotopes. This can be done in nuclear reactors or with lasers.
HistoryThe French physicist Gérard Mourou (1944) is working on the development of ultra fast lasers. |
