Vacuum energy

The vacuum energy is the energy of empty space.

Explanation

Quantum fluctuations cause both matter and antimatter to form from 'nothing', but together they disappear very quickly.

Note

Perhaps the vacuum energy is the same as the 'dark energy' that is postulated to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Historiy

The basic problem of a vacuum energy producing a gravitational effect was identified as early as 1916 by the German chemist Walther Nernst.
