Strangeness

Strangeness S is a quantum number that concerns the strange quark.

 


Explanation

The strangeness of a particle is defined as

S = −(ns − n)

where ns is the number of strange-quarks and n is the number of strange-antiquarks.

 


History

The American physicist Murray Gell-Mann (1929 - 2019) has introduced strangeness.
